A few months ago, I had a crazy idea for a photo shoot at two in the morning. Jennifer Hamilton brought it to life, and we gave two busy lovebirds a day to relax by a campfire and just enjoy each other’s company.

If you’re anything like me, you have sticky notes and papers with notes and reminders scribbled all over. Don’t worry, I’m not judging ;) This workflow chart lays out my entire process from start to finish with my clients, as well as the behind-the-scenes details like designing albums, creating blog posts and backing up images. It creates a systematic and easy-to-understand process for each client,  and is easily reusable year after year. Making changes to your workflow? Simply edit the layered Photoshop file and order a new print! I house mine in a 24×30 frame and use dry-erase markers on the glass. Some photographers have printed the PSD file onto dry-erase boards, others have experimented with metal prints.

I just love working with Rachel! Her wedding clients are always so carefree and beautiful, and the weddings I get to shoot with her are amazing! Lindsey was the epitome of a gorgeous, classy, happy southern bride. The blush colored tulle in her dress complimented her bridesmaids’ dresses so well, and the bouquets really put it all together. The outdoor ceremony was perfect, the sun was in just the right spot, and the indoor/outdoor reception was one of the classiest I’ve ever been to. I really enjoyed ending my year with a wedding like this, and I can’t wait to shoot another wedding at the Governor’s Club soon!

The church was so full of light and rainbows that danced off the purple hues of the bridesmaids and the sequins in Tara’s dress. I had the opportunity to second shoot this wedding with Nashville wedding photographer Chesley Summar, and I enjoyed it so much! Getting to second shoot opens up so many possibilities for me as a photographer. Because the primary photographer always handles the timeline, contact with the couple, and other responsibilities that I take on when I shoot your wedding, I get to spend my time hunting for the best light, the neat little hiding places to shoot through, things that push my creative limits, and inspire me to shoot more like that at my own weddings. Matt and Tara’s reception at Union Station was such a blast. I love it when guests get down and party. It makes shooting receptions so much more fun!

Internet, meet Hootie. Hootie, meet the internet. Hootie has been a Somohano since 2008. He was a birthday present to me from myself, and he is my most loyal friend, and the best darn office assistant ever. Hootie loves taking trips to the dog park, the grocery store, the mail box, the pharmacy…let’s just say Hootie likes car rides. Hootie is a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier with an unhealthy obsession with tennis balls, laser lights, and pretty much anything he can fetch.

Hootie’s job in the office is to make sure that I keep all of my things organized, and he even answers emails every now and then. He’s a huge asset to this company, and he loves my clients just as much as I do :) I’m shooting a lot more personal work here in the next few months, so expect to see his cute furry face more in the near future!

I’ve always been a hands-on learner. I’ve also always loved to teach. Being in photography school taught me the technical aspects of photography, but experience in the field and meetings with other photographers is what taught me the most important aspects. I’m a young photographer myself, and I know I have a lot of growing to do, but I feel like this year, I could reach out and try to help some younger, budding photography students who might not be aware of the resources around them to learn from. For a limited time, I’m offering half-day and full-day mentoring sessions to local Nashville photography students interested in pursuing a career shooting weddings. Half-day sessions will include discussion on starting your own business, gear, networking and marketing. Full-day sessions will include discussion & a shoot with editing.
